A college bookstore ordered six boxes of red pens. The store sold 39 red pens last eek and 42 red pens this week. 9 pens were left on the shelf. How many pens were in each box?
------
Let # in each box be "x":
Equation:
6x - 39-42 = 9
6x -81 = 9
6x = 90
x = 15 (# of pens in each box)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
15 pens in each box
first week sold-----39
second week sold----42
39+42=81
9 pens left on shelf +9
39+42+9=90, total of pens 90
just find a number that you can multiply & divide by and get the same answer
