In general, here is the process to convert mixed numbers to improper fractions:

Let represent the whole number part of the mixed number, let represent the denominator of the fraction part, and let represent the numerator part of the fraction part, then the improper fraction equivalent of the mixed number is:



In other words, multiply the denominator of the fraction part times the whole number part and add the product to the numerator.

For example:



Four times two is eight plus one is nine -- nine is the new numerator and the denominator remains the same.
