Hi,
Tom runs 5 miles per hour faster than Carl
Let r AND (r+5) represent Carl's and Toms's speeds respectively
Question states***
Tom and Carl start 200 miles apart, running towards each other.
they meet after 10 hours
Note: d = rt
rt + (r+5)t = 200
t[r +(r+5)] = 200
t = 200/(2r+5) = 10hrs
Solving for r
10(2r+5) = 200
2r + 5 = 20
2r = 15
r = 7.5, carls speed, tom's speed is 12.5
CHECKING our Answer***
7.5·10 + 12.5·10 = 75 + 125 = 200mi
