If he had 4 quarters, that would be $1 already without consideration of the nickels and dimes.
If he had 3 quarters (75 cents) then he would have 6 nickels (30 cents) and again, we are over a buck.
If he had 2 quarters (50 cents then he would have 4 nickels (20 cents). Still less than a buck, but then he would have 8 dimes -- too much again.
If he had 0 quarters, then he would have zero nickels and zero dimes. But the probem states that he has "some" nickels, that is more than zero nickels.
The only possibility left is 1 quarter, 2 nickels, and 4 dimes for a total of 75 cents.
