: A plane flies 560mi in 1.75 hr traveling with the wind. The return trip later against the same ind takes the plane 2 hrs. Find the speed of the plane and the speed of the wind. This question is from textbook intermediate algebra
You can put this solution on YOUR website! A plane flies 560mi in 1.75 hr traveling with the wind. The return trip later against the same ind takes the plane 2 hrs. Find the speed of the plane and the speed of the wind.
------------
Downwind DATA:
distance= 560 mi ; time = 1.75 hr ; rate = 560/1.75=320 mph
-----------
Upwind DATA:
distance = 560 m ; time = 2 hr ; rate = 560/2=280 mph
--------------
EQUATIONS:
Let speed of plane be "s" and velocity of wind be "w".
s+w=320
s-w=280
Add the equations to get:
2s=600
s=300 mph (speed of the plane in still air)
Substitute in one of the equations to find "w".
300+w=320
w=20 mph (speed of the wind)
