Question 597207: I'm 39 years old, this question is for my own knowledge.
If I putt a golf ball through a hole that is 2 inches wide from three feet away, how wide would that hole have to be to allow the ball through at 6 feet away?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! this is similar to projecting a shadow on a wall
at twice the distance, the shadow is twice as large
so, a 4in hole at 6ft is comparable to a 2in hole at 3ft
for your own knowledge -- according to wikipedia, the diameter of a golf ball is 1.68 in
___ if you're putting through a hole (as opposed to "into" a hole in the ground) this means the clearance at 2in is .32in
___ a 4in hole has 2.32in of clearance (7 times as much)
___ when putting into a cup (on a real course), as long as the center of the ball catches the inside of the cup, you're in
___ through a hole means the the outside of the ball must be inside the hole (see comments on clearance)
aren't you glad you asked?
