Probably spent means to "subtract", since by spending you are taking away from the money that you started with.

"Spent" means the same thing in math as it does in real life.

However, "spent" is somewhat related with subtraction. For example, if you had $12 and you spend $5 on a sandwich, the amount you have left would be $12 - $5 = $7.
