Question 596432: I am having trouble determining what equation to use to solve this problem, and how to solve it. The value of a 1950's nickel is 3/2 the value of a 1945 nickel minted in similar conditions. The total value of the coins is $10. What is the value of the 1945 nickel
the 1950 nickel?
I tired using 10=2x-3/2 to figure it out but the answer does not seem right at all. Thank you for the help!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The value of a 1950's nickel is 3/2 the value of a 1945 nickel minted in similar conditions. The total value of the coins is $10.
-------------
f = value of 1945
y = value of 1950 = 1.5f
-----
f + y = 1000
f + 1.5f = 1000
2.5f = 1000
f = 4000 = $40
y = $60
