  1. Draw a right triangle and label one of the acute angles P.
  2. Sin sin is opposite/hypotenuse, label the side opposite to P with a length of 8 and make the length of the hypotenuse 17.
  3. Since tan is opposite/adjacent, we need the adjacent side. Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the adjacent side. (Remember, the hypotenuse has to be the longest side. If you get a higher number than 17 for the adjacent side, then you used the Pythaqorean equation incorrectly. (The hypotenuse must be on one side by itself!))
  4. tan(P) will be the ratio of the opposite side, 8, over the adjacent side (which you found in the previous step.)
