Question 596430: In right triangle PRS, sin ∠P = (8/17) . What is tan ∠P?
Answer by jsmallt9(3758) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! - Draw a right triangle and label one of the acute angles P.
- Sin sin is opposite/hypotenuse, label the side opposite to P with a length of 8 and make the length of the hypotenuse 17.
- Since tan is opposite/adjacent, we need the adjacent side. Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the adjacent side. (Remember, the hypotenuse has to be the longest side. If you get a higher number than 17 for the adjacent side, then you used the Pythaqorean equation incorrectly. (The hypotenuse must be on one side by itself!))
- tan(P) will be the ratio of the opposite side, 8, over the adjacent side (which you found in the previous step.)
