Question 593284: I have a 4th grader trying to solve a math word problem. I need to help her and show her the reasoning behind the answer. Please help!
How long can long-legged spiders crawl?
clue: Dante rides his bike 8 miles per hour, racing the fastest spider. After a half-hour, the spider is 1 mile ahead of him. I already know the answer is 10, but I am trying to teach her the reasoning.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Dante rides his bike 8 miles per hour, racing the fastest spider. After a half-hour, the spider is 1 mile ahead of him.
-----------------------
In 1/2 hr, Dante went 4 miles (8 mi/hr * 0.5 hr)
The spider is 1 mile ahead --> 5 miles in 0.5 hr
-----
d = r*t
r = d/t = 5/0.5
r = 10 mi/hr
-------------
In absolute terms, the fastest spider is the camel spider that lives in hot, desert regions. This eight-legged speedster can run across sand at an impressive 10-12 mph.
================
I think that's the answer you wanted, since you said it was 10. But, you asked "how long can it crawl?"
------------
PS All spiders have eight legs.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! if Dante can ride 8 miles per hour; in half an hour, he rides half of 8 or 4 miles
in that same half hour; the spider goes one mile more than Dante, or 5 miles
if the spider can go 5 miles in a half hour; he can go twice that in an hour, or 10 miles per hour
