Question 592795: A rectangular is 100 meters long and 65 meters wide.
Give the length and width of another rectangular field that has the same perimeter but a smaller area.
How do I figure out this problem? Answer by solver91311(24713) (Show Source):
Step 1: Calculate the area of the given rectangle.
Step 2: Use the fact that the maximum area for a rectangle of a given perimeter is a square where each side is the perimeter divided by 4 to realize that very long and short or very tall and narrow rectangles have smaller areas than rectangles with the same perimeter that are closer to square shaped. Add 1 meter to the length and subtract one meter from the width -- the area will be smaller.
