Divide thru the 1st equation by -4 to get:
2x + y = 17
So y = 17-2x
---
Substitute for "y" in the 2nd equation:
x + 3(17-2x) = 16
x + 51 - 6x = 16
-5x = -25
x = 5
----
Solve for "y":
y = 17-2*5
y = 7
