Question 58987: Please help me.
I have simplified the equation: 2/5-y/y-2. I got -3y+4/5(y-2). Is it correct? Can it be further simplified?
Thanks

You can put this solution on YOUR website! 2/5-y/y-2
Comment: There are several ways to interpret this
problem, since you did not use parentheses to make it clear.
-----------
Here's one way:
(2/5) - (y/(y-2))
The LCD is 5(y-2)
Write each fraction with LCD as its denominator, as follows:
[2(y-2)]/LCD -[2y/LCD]
Combine the numerators to get:
[2y-4-2y]/LCD
-4/[5(y-2)]
--------------
Another interpretation is 2/(5-y)/(y-2)
=2(y-2)/(5-y)
=[2y-4]/(5-y]
--------------
There are several others but I will skip that.
Moral of the story: Use parentheses so others
will see the problem the way you see it.
Cheers,
Stan H.
