Ashley This question is from textbook Beginning Algebra
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Solve the following systems by substitution:
L1) 4x - 12y = 5
L2) -x + 3y = -1
Solve L2) for x and substitute that in for x in L1):
-x+3y-3y=-1-3y
-x=-1-3y
-(-x)=-(-1-3y)
x=1+3y
:
4(1+3y)-12y=5
4+12y-12y=5
4+0=5
4=5
Your variables were eliminated and 4 does not = 5, there is no solution. These are parallel lines that will never intersect.
Happy Calculating, Ashley!!!
