Question 588169: suppose we know that the sum of two numbers is 24. The second number is 6 less than the first. Write a system of equations and solve it to find the number.
Is it like this x-6=24

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You don't need a "system of equations", just one equation will do.

x = one number
x - 6 = second number {second number is 6 less than first}

x + x - 6 = 24 {sum of two numbers is 24}
2x - 6 = 24 {combined like terms}
2x = 30 {added 6 to both sides}
x = 15 {divided both sides by 2}
x - 6 = 9 {substituted 15, in for x, into x - 6}

15 and 9 are the two numbers
