1st equation multiplied by 12 ___ 8x + 3y = 24
2nd eqn. multiplied by 9 ___ 3x - y = 81 ___ multiplying by 3 to setup elimination of y ___ 9x - 3y = 243
adding equations to eliminate y ___ 8x + 3y + 9x - 3y = 24 + 243 ___ 17x = 267 ___ x = 267/17
substituting ___ 3(267/17) - y = 81 ___ 3(267/17) - 81 = y
