Vince need 12 quarts of a 60% anti-freeze solution. He will continue an amount of 100% anti-freeze with an amount of a 50% anti-freeze solution. How many quarts of each solution should be mixed to make the required amount of the 60% anti-freeze solution?
.
Let x = amount (quarts) of 100% solution
then
12-x = amount (quarts) of 50% solution
.
x + .50(12-x) = .60(12)
x + 6-.50x = 7.2
.50x + 6 = 7.2
.50x = 1.2
x = 2.4 quarts of 100% solution
.
50% solution:
12-x = 12-2.4 = 9.6 quarts of 50% solution
