Question 583399: It takes three hours to drive to a city. If you had driven 10 mph slower it would have taken 36 minutes longer. How far did you drive? "I am a little confused because I thought I would need more information to solve a problem like this one. I thought at first to do this: 3 hours 3 hours 36 minutes, then have something else on the bottom of one to compare them to, but there is nothing, except I arrived at the city??????????"

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
It takes three hours to drive to a city.
If you had driven 10 mph slower it would have taken 36 minutes longer.
How far did you drive?
:
Change 36 min to hrs: 36/60 = .6 hr
:
First find the speed; then we can find the distance
:
s = the actual speed
then
(s-10) = the slower speed
:
Write a distance equation, dist = speed * time
:
slow speed dist = actual speed distance
3.6(s-10) = 3s
3.6s - 36 = 3s
3.6s - 3s = 36
.6s = 36
s = 36/.6
s = 60 mph is the speed
:
Now find the distance:
3 * 60 = 180 mi
:
Check the distance using the slower speed, it should be the same
3.6 * 50 = 180 mi
