3(x+4) = (1/2)x-8
----
3x+12 = (1/2)x - 8
(5/2)x = -20
x = (2/5)(-20)
---
x = -8

Translate into an algebra problem (this requires practice) where x is the number

Subtract x/2 from both sides

Subtract 12 from both sides
