You can put this solution on YOUR website! A commercial Airline flies frequently between Los Angeles and Chicago. One of the jets flew at an average speed of 640 mph from Los Angeles to Chicago. On the return trip due to turbulance the jet averaged only 512 mph, and the return trip took 48 minutes longer.
a) model the mathematical relationship.
Downwind DATA:
rate=640mph; time=x hrs; distance= 640x miles
Upwind DATA:
rate=512mph; time=x+48/60 hrs ; distance = 512(x+48/60)
EQUATION
distance = distance
640x=512x+409.6
128x=409.6
x=3.2 hrs for the downwind trip
-----------------
b) How many hours was the flight from Chicago to Los Angeles?
3.2 hrs + 48/60 hrs= 4 hrs.
---------------------
c) What is the distance between Chicago and Los Angeles?
distance = 640x=640*3.2=2048 miles
