Two ways to do it:

Recognize that 42 = 14*3 and 14+3 = 17. Therefore X and Y are 14 and 3.

The other solution is to say that . Substituting into the first equation you will get . Solve the quadratic. You should get X = 3 or X = 14 (which makes sense since X and Y are symmetric and they lead to the same solution).
