Question 57679: Jane runs seven times more than she swims. She bikes seven times more than she runs. In one week, she swam, biked, and ran a total of 232 miles. How many miles did she run that week? Answer by rcmcc(152) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! you can solve this question by setting up a linear equation,
let our variable be X
since she runs 7 times more than she swims we can state that swimming is x and running is 7x. since biking is 7 times more than running we can say (7)(7x) or 49X. Because the total distance is 232 miles we can set up the equation below.
(x)+(7x)+(49x)=232
because all the terms are alike we can add them together..
57X=232
now you divide both sides by 57 to isolate x
x=4.07017......
so she swims 4.07 miles, she runs (7)*4.07= 28.5 miles and she bikes 28.5*(7)=199.5 miles
