Question 573819: sam lives 45 miles due West of where he works. Everyday he drives on the highway at 65 mph. Jim works in the same building, and lives 30 miles due East, but is only able to drive 40 mph. If they both leave at the exact same time, who reaches work first? what is the difference in their travel times (rounded to the nearest hundredth of an hour)? if they do not stop at the building where they work and just kept on driving, after how much time would they pass each other on the road? Round to the nearest THOUSANDTH of an hour. How many miles are they from the office building when they pass one another?
You can put this solution on YOUR website! sam lives 45 miles due West of where he works.
Everyday he drives on the highway at 65 mph.
Jim works in the same building, and lives 30 miles due East, but is only able to drive 40 mph.
If they both leave at the exact same time, who reaches work first? what is the difference in their travel times?
(rounded to the nearest hundredth of an hour)?
:
Jim's travel time: * 60 = 45 min
Sam-s travel time: * 60 = 41.558 min, get there first, obviously
-------------------------------------------------
the difference in their travel times: 3. 44 min
:
if they do not stop at the building where they work and just kept on driving, after how much time would they pass each other on the road?
Round to the nearest THOUSANDTH of an hour.
:
The distance they are from each other when they start: 45 + 30 = 75 mi
:
Let t = travel time till they meet
:
Write a dist equation: dist = speed * time
:
65t + 40t = 75
105t = 75
t =
t = .7142857 hr
:
" How many miles are they from the office building when they pass one another?
Jim: (.714 * 65) - 45 = 1.41 mi passed the office
Sam: (.714 * 40) - 30 = 1.44 mi before the office
:
I should have pointed out that when the two meet, of course they will be exactly the same distance from the office. The .03 mi discrepancy was from rounding off the decimals.
