Question 5736: Solve by substitution method. Determine whether it is independent, dependent, inconsistent.
y = 3x
y = 3x + 1
this is what I did:
3x = 3x + 1
3x –3 = 3x –3 + 1
x = 3x - 2
x – 3x = -2
-2x = -2
x = 0 Independent
I'm not sure if I'm correct or not. Please help. Thanks so much.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You made a mistake. 3x-3 is not x. {3 cannot be subtracted from 3x)
3x –3 = 3x –3 + 1
You should have recognized that no number can satisfy this equation, the right side of this equation will ALWAYS be 1 greater than the left side of the equation:
3x=3x+1
so it is inconsistant.
