The sum of two numbers is 86. The second is 1 more than 4 times the first. What are the two numbers?
----------------
Let one of the numbers be "x".
The other is "4x+1".
EQUATION:
x+4x+1=86
5x=85
x=17 (the 1st number)
4x+1=69 (the 2nd number)

The sum of two numbers is 86. The second is 1 more than 4 times the first. What are the two numbers?
Let x+y =86
x+(4x+1)=86
x+4x+1=86
5x+1=86
5x=86-1
5x=85
5x/5=85/5
x=17 [First number]
.
(4x+1) [The second number]
4(17)+1
69
.
So, 17+69=86
