Now just rewrite it
+x+ + +5%2F8+ = +1+
+x+%2B+5%2F8+=+1+
Subtract +5%2F8+ from both sides
+x+=+1+-+5%2F8+
+x+=+8%2F8+-+5%2F8+
+x+=+3%2F8+
So, if you plug this back into the sentence itself,
3/8 ( added to ) 5/8 ( equals ) 1
