Draw a number line like this

Now on the line above the 1 draw an open circle
like this

Now since x is greater than 1, and all the
numbers greater than 1 are to the right of
the number 1 on the line, darken the line to
the right of 1, and put an arrow on the
right end to indicate that the values of x
which are greater than 1 do not stop at 6,
but continue indefinitely to the right, like
this:

Now if you had to draw the graph of
x < 1
instead, it would have been:
