Question 565267: So and so rode her bike from her house to the beach and walked back home. The total travel time was 2 hours. If she averaged 9 mph on the bike and 4 mph walking, how far is it from her house to the beach? Answer by ad_alta(240) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! I need to know her name to solve the problem! Just kidding ;)
Remember that the distance to the beach is the same as the distance home. Therefore 9t_1=4t_2 (for the two different times). Moreover, t_1+t_2=2. Substituting, 9t_1=4(2-t_1). So t_1=8/13. The distance is then (8/13)(9), or about 5.54 miles. Why did she leave her bike at the beach? Now that's a good question.
