I have found the LCD of (y+5)(y-5) and multiplied both sides by the LCD. The answer I got was y=1/2. I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

You have the LCD.
Multiply thru by the LCD to get:
(y-5)-3(y+5) = 12
-2y-20=12
-2y=-32
y=16
