Question 561717: I need help with setting up the equation for this story problem and solving it. Can you please help me?
Margaret wants to buy 200 shares of stock in an internet company. she buys some shares at $8.125 per share, and the rest when the price has gone up to $9.375 per share. if she spent a total of $1725 for all the shares, how many shares did she buy at each price?
I usually set up a table and put all the numbers in place, but i don't know how.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Margaret wants to buy 200 shares of stock in an internet company. she buys some shares at $8.125 per share, and the rest when the price has gone up to $9.375 per share. if she spent a total of $1725 for all the shares, how many shares did she buy at each price?
.
Assign a variable to things you don't know:
Let x = number of shares purchased at $8.125
then because we know a total of 200 was bought:
200-x = number of shares purchased at $9.375
.
you equation is then:
8.125x + 9.375(200-x) = 1725
.
