Question 561121: a single ice cream cone costs $2.25. A double cone costs $3.00. Total sales for the day equals $66.00. There were 8 more double cones sold this day than single cones. How many single cones and double cones were sold?
My setup looks like this but cannot get past it.
$2.25A + $3.00(B + 8)= $66.00
Where A = Single Cones and B = Double Cones
Thank you in advance for the help.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! A equals number of single ice cream cones
B equals number of double ice cream cones
cost of the one is given by the equation:
2.25A + 3.00B = 66.00
there were 8 more double cones sold during the day than single cones.
since A is the number of single cones and B is the number of double cones, and 8 more double cones were sold than single cones, you can set B equal to A + 8.
your equation for this i:
B = A + 8
you can now substitute in your cost equation by replacing B with A + 8 to get:
2.25A + 3.00B = 66.00 becomes:
2.25A + 3.00(A + 8) = 66.00
simplify this equation to get:
2.25A + 3.00A + 24.00 = 66.00
combine like terms to get:
5.25A + 24.00 = 66.00
subtract 24.00 from both sides of the equation to get:
5.25A = 42.00
divide both sides of this equation to get:
A = 8
since B = A + 8, then B = 16
you have:
A = 8 = number of single cones sold.
B = 16 = number of double cones sold.
total sale = 2.25 * 8 + 3.00 * 16.00 = $18.00 + $48.00 = $66.00
