You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Joe has a collection of nickels and dimes that is worth $7.05. If the number of dimes were doubled and the number of nickles were increased by 8, the value of the coins would be $12.35. How many dimes does he have?
---------------
Equations:
5n + 10d = 705 cents
5(n+8)+10(2d) = 1235 cents
-------------------------------
5n + 10d = 705
5n + 20d = 1235-40
------------------------
Subtract and solve for "d":
10d = 490
d = 49 (# of dimes)
----
Solve for "n":
5n + 10d = 705
5n + 490 = 705
5n = 215
n = 43 (# of nickels)
