Question 560242: the difference between two positive numbers is 7 while their product is 60. find the two numbers
Found 3 solutions by fcabanski, Maths68, rapaljer: Answer by fcabanski(1391) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! x-y=7 | The difference between them is 7.
x*y=60 | Their product is 60.
Solve the first equation for x, then substitute that value for x in the second equation to find y.
x=y+7
(y+7)*y = 60
y^2 + 7y = 60
y^2 +7y - 60 = 0
(y+12)(y-5)=0 | At this point you probably see the answer, but continue solving for y.
y+12=0 so y=-12
y-5 = 0 so y=5
Only y=5 is valid because the problem specifies positive numbers.
x-y=7 and now we know y=5
x-5=7
x=12

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let x = smaller number
x+7= larger number
x(x+7) = 60
x^2+7x-60=0
If there is a solution to this, then it MUST factor:
(x+12)(x-5)=0
x=-12 Reject, since x must be a positive integer
x=5 Smaller number
x+7 = 12 Larger number
Solving Word Problems is not nearly as hard as most people think they are. For a non-traditional explanation, please see my own website. To find my website, use the easy-to-remember and easy-to-spell website www.mathinlivingcolor.com. Then click on the link at the bottom of this page to take you to my Homepage.
Near the top of my Homepage, look for the link called "Basic, Intermediate, and College Algebra: One Step at a Time." Choose the "Basic Algebra" link, and look in "Chapter 2" for "Section 2.09" on Solving Quadratic Equations, and "Section 2.11 Applications of Quadratic Equations." You will really like the "MATH IN LIVING COLOR" sections that go with these sections, where many of the hardest problems are solved for you in COLOR.
I have explanations on most topics from algebra that might be easier for you to understand than your own textbook. The entire website is FREE!! If anyone needs help finding a page on my website, send me an Email at rapaljer@seminolestate.edu.
