Question 558577: Hello:
please help me solved these word problems that i had to do for a math class. I have at least five to solve. In all I have completed 10 of the 18 problems given, anyway this is one of them: Two hikers Alan and Ben are 22.8 miles apart and walking toward each other. They meet in 6 hours. You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Two hikers Alan and Ben are 22.8 miles apart and walking toward each other.
They meet in 6 hours.
Find the rate of each hiker if Ben walks 0.8 faster than Alan What is Alan and Ben rate of speed.
:
Let s = Alan's walking speed
then
(s+.8) = Ben's walking speed
:
Since they are walking towards each other, their relative speed:
s + (s+.8) = (2s+.8) mph
:
Write time equation: time = dist/speed
22.8%2F%28%282s%2B.8%29%29 = 6
22.8 = 6(2s+.8)
22.8 = 12s + 4.8
22.8 - 4.8 = 12s
18 = 12s
s = 18%2F12
s = 1.5 mph is Alan's speed
then
1.5 + .8 = 2.3 mph is Ben's speed
:
:
We can confirm this by finding the sum of the distance of each walker
6*1.5 = 9.0
6*2.3 = 13.8
---------------
totals: 22.8
