We can sub in 30+w for l
(30+w)*w=4000
30w+w^2=4000
w^2+30w=4000
w^2+30w-4000=0
(w+80)(w-50)=0
w+80=0 or w-50=0
w=-80 or w=50
discard the negative option since distances are only positive and we get w=50 which would give us a length of 80 when we plug 50 back into l=30+w
