Question 553941: A military tanker left Stapleton Airport at 2:30 pm flying south at 575 mph. An hour and a half later, a bomber left the airport on the same course flying at 800 mph. At what time will the two planes meet for midair refueling?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +d+ = distance the bomber flies until they meet
Let +t+ = time from 4:00 PM until they meet
In 1.5 hrs, the tanker gets a head start of
+575%2A1.5+=+862.5+ mi
Start a stopwatch when the bomber leaves at 4:00 PM
-------------------
Bomber's equation:
(1) +d+=+800t+
Tanker's equation:
(2) +d+-+862.5+=+575t+
( note they are both flying for the same time on stopwatch )
Substitute (1) into (2)
(2) +800t+-+862.5+=+575t+
(2) +225t+=+862.5+
(2) +t+=+3.8333+ ( continuing decimal )
This is 3 hrs and 50 min on stopwatch
They meet at 4:00 PM + 3 hrs 50 min = 7:50 PM
check answer:
(1) +d+=+800%2A3.8333+
(1) +d+=+3066.6666+
and
(2) +d+-+862.5+=+575%2A3.8333+
(2) +d+=+862.5+%2B+2204.1666+
(2) +d+=+3066.6666+
OK
