Question 553311: A plane left an airport and flew with the wind for 4 hours, covering 2000 miles. It then returned over the same route to the airport against the same wind in 5 hours. Find the rate of the plane in still air and the speed of the wind.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
in both the cases distance is same.
for case 1 speed is 2000/4 = 500mph
and for case 2 speed is 2000/5 = 400mph.
.
average of sum of these will provide speed of plane.
so, speed of plane = %28500%2B400%29%2F2+=+900%2F2+=+450mph
.
and speed of wind= 500 - 450 = 50mph.
