Question 552413: I am trying to help my daughter with her homework from 1300 miles away please help! The problem is find the equation of a line in slope intercept form with an undefined slope and passes though (3,-2). Thank you so much, it's been a long time since I've done this stuff.

The problem is find the equation of a line in slope intercept form with an undefined slope and passes though (3,-2).
-----
Plot the point (3,-2)
---
If the slope is undefined the line is a vertical line.
----
Draw a vertical line thru (3,-2).
----
Notice that the line passes thru ALL the points
where x = 3.
-----
Equation:
x = 3
--
In slope intercept form:
0*y + x = 3

find the equation of a line in slope intercept form with an undefined slope and passes though (3,-2).
:
a line with a undefined slope is a vertical line, the equation: x=3
It passes thru all values for y including y=-2. it's parallel to the y axis so
the slope/intercept form seems rather meaningless

An equation in slope-intercept form is: y = mx + b.
m = slope = the 'rise' over the 'run' or the change in y divided by the change in x.
(0,b) = y-intercept
.
The statement "with an undefined slope" has a distinct mathematical meaning: it means you have a situation where you need to divide by 0.
.
In contrast, 0 can be divided by any number, which yields 0 as the answer.
.
The slope = change in y divided by the change in x.
.
slope = m = (y-y1) / (x-x1)
.
To divide by 0 would mean x = x1.
.
That can only be a vertical line.
.
The vertical line that goes through (3,-2) is simply: x = 3.
This line goes through all of the points from (3, -infinity) to (3, +infinity), where y takes on any value from -infinity to +infinity.
.
Interestingly, the horizontal line that goes through (3,-2) is simply: y = -2. It has a slope = 0.
.
Vertical and horizontal lines are special cases.
