Let the first number be x.

Then the second number must be 2x.

Then we can set up an equation for the given information:

x%2B2x=63 given

3x=63 combined like terms

x=21 divided both sides by 3

If x=21, then 2x=42

Our two numbers are 21 and 42, and indeed, they do add up to 63.
