I am using a calculator and I think the answer is 1/2 but the thing is I am not sure how to show the steps because I think I might be doing it wrong.
-40y-48+48=-48+48
so what do you do with -40y? There is nothing to divide by so how do you get the answer?

-40y=-48-48
-40y=-96
y=96/40
y=2.4
proof
-4(10*2.4-12)=-48
-4(24-12)=-48
-4*12=-48
-48=-48
