A boat is being pulled into a dock with a rope attached to the boat at water level. When the boat is 12 feet from the dock the length of the rope from the boat to the dock is 3ft longer than twice the height of the dock above the water. Find the height of the dock.

the high of the dock = x
the rope from the boat to the dock is 3ft longer than twice the height of the dock= 2x + 3
setting the equation
2x + 3 = 12
2x = 9
x = 9/2
x = 4.5
dock high = 4 1/2 feet high.
