Question 544847: The problem I have is 4x – 3 = x – y. I need to graph this but I don't understand how to get there, teacher didn't cover an equation like this. I have tried subtracting x from both sides leaving 3x - 3 = -y but I don't see how you would get graph points from that. Could you please explain how I can solve this problem? I don't want just the answer, i'd like to know how to solve for future reference.
Again, graph 4x-3=x-y

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Hello,
4x – 3 = x – y.
The best way for graphing is,
convert the line into y=mx + b form.
then use this;
ALWAYS REMEMBER,
When y intercepts, put x= 0
When x intercepts, put y= 0
Now solving your equation,
4x – 3 = x – y.
-y + x = -3 + 4x
-y = 4x - x - 3
-y = 3x - 3
y = -3x + 3
now this tells us that the slope is -3 and the y intercept is 3.
Well, moving on.
Finding x intercept,
put y = 0
y = -3x + 3
0 = -3x + 3
-3 = -3x
3 = 3x
3/3= x
x = 1
So u got x intercept = x=1
now the line with cut the x axis at 1.
and y axis at 3.
BINGo!! =D

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Your first step is correct. Now, to solve for y, multiply both sides by -1, and you get
-1(3x-3)=-1*-y
-3x+3 = y
y=-3x+3
Now, the slope is -3 and the y intercept is 3, and it looks like this:
