mult what's inside the brackets:
2x + 4 = 2y - 2

Step 2:
subtract 4 from both sides to get x by itself on the left:
2x + 4 - 4 = 2y - 2 - 4
2x = 2y - 6

Step 3:
Divide both sides by 2 to get 1x or just x

2/2 = 1 and 2 goes evenly into 2y and - 6 so you have:
x = y - 3
