5 - 10w + 8w = 15

The goal is to get the w on one side of the equal sign all by itself. First we simplify both sides as much as we can using the order of operations (PEMDAS). Then anything that we need to move we add, subtract, multiply or divide from both sides of the equal sign:
5(1-2w)+8w=15 First multiply the 5 by everything in the parenthesis.
5-10w+8w=15 Then combine like terms.
5+(-10+8)w=15
5-2w=15 Since 5 is being added to the left, subtract it from both sides.
-5+5-2w=15-5
-2w=10 Finally, since -2 is being multiplied by w, divide it from both sides.
-2w/-2=10/-2
