Question 538891: Please help me solve this :
Find the mean for the following probability distribution, where x = number of hurricanes that hit a certain coast area in any given year and P(x) = the corresponding probabilities.
x P(x)
0 .15
1 .4
2 .3
3 .15
I think I would go X = 4 and P(x)=.37 q= 1-.37 =.63
and .63 would be my mean but im not sure if i have to find mean that is
0+.15 /2 = .075
1+.4=.7 and so on
Thanks for you help

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Mean = sum of the x*P(x) terms

Mean = 0*0.15 + 1*0.4 + 2*0.3 + 3*0.15

Mean = 0 + 0.4 + 0.6 + 0.45

Mean = 1.45

So the mean is 1.45
