Question 538434: Suppose that 200 pounds of freshly picked cucumbers are 99% water by weight. After several days, some of the water from the cucumbers has evaporated, and the cucumbers are now 98% water. How much do the cucumbers weigh now?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
99% of 200 is:

.99*200=198lbs of water. That leaves 2lbs of "meat" (non water part of the cucumber...the actual vegetable part).

The equation can also be written as p*w=w-2 where p is the percentage water weight, w is the total weight, and 2 is the weight of the "meat".

In the new situation where the water weight is 98% that's

.98*w=w-2

Subtract w from both sides.

-.02w=-2

Divide both sides by -.02.

w=100.

After evaporation, the cucumbers weigh only 100 lbs. 2 lbs of that is meat, and 98 pounds is water.
