125:1 means "125 of this thing is the same as 1 of that thing" In other words 1 whole thing on the right side is comprised of 125 pieces of whatever is represented by the left side.

Look at it like a pizza. The chef cuts the pie into eight equal pieces giving you 8:1, that is 8 pieces is the same as 1 whole pizza. So 1 piece is how much of a whole pie?

You can write a ratio both ways. If there are 6 pencils for 3 children, then there are 2 pencils per child (2:1). But you can also say there is 1/2 child per pencil (1:2). That's an inverse ratio.


The inverse ratio of 25:1 is 1:25.


That's one way to look at this problem. It might also be asking you for the same ratio expressed in terms of 1:something or 1/something rather than 25 to something. In other words, if there are 2 pencils per child (2:1) then there are 1 pencils per 1/2 child (1:1/2).


Divide both 25 and 1 by 25. 25/25 : 1/25 is 1:1/25 or 1:.04.
