Question 536663: Use an inequality to solve the problem. Be sure to show the inequality and all of your work.
One side of a rectangle is 14 inches and the other is x inches. What values of x will make the perimeter at most 80 inches?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
P = 2L + 2W.

In this case call L=14 and W=x.

x may turn out to be more than 14 and L is usually the longer dimension. But it really isn't important which is called L and which is W.

At most 80 inches means P <=80.

2(14) + 2x <= 80.

28 + 2x <= 80

Subtract 28 from both sides.

2x <= 52

Divide both sides by 2.

x <= 26

It turns out x is really the length, the longer measure, but it wasn't important to the calculation.
