Step 1 list the numbers and their squares.

3%5E2=9

4%5E2=16

5%5E2=25


Notice that the value in question isn't one of these perfect squares. But it does lie between two of them.


9%3C14%3C16 Thus their square roots are in the same relationship.


sqrt%289%29%3Csqrt%2814%29%3Csqrt%2816%29


Which means 3%3Csqrt%2814%29%3C4


Since 14 is closer to 16 than to 9, sqrt%2814%29 will be closer to 4 than to 3.


Plot it somewhere between 3 and 4, closer to 4 than to 3.
