Let n = the number, then:
5n+7 = 2n+6 Subtract 2n from both sides.
3n+7 = 6 Subtract 7 from both sides.
3n = -1 Divide both sides by 3.
n = -1/3
But I think that you may have left something out of your problem because it states:
"The sum of 7 more than 5 times a number (5n+7)... and what?
